'Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha' actress Shin Min-a quietly donated over $2.7 million in 15 years to help burn victims, underprivileged children and vulnerable families; charity officials initially mistook her recurring contributions for an error

South Korean actor Shin Min-a, best known internationally for her performances in ‘Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha’, has drawn attention for a charitable record that spans more than 15 years. The actor has reportedly donated over 3.7 billion won (approximately $2.7 million) during this period, supporting burn victims, children from low-income families and other vulnerable communities. Her contributions came to light after a post attributed to a foundation representative revealed that the organisation initially believed the recurring deposits from her bank account were made by mistake, according to The Korea JoongAng Daily. The post, which circulated across online communities and social media in South Korea, described how substantial amounts of money had begun arriving in an organisation’s account every month in 2009. The person claiming to represent the foundation said they initially struggled to identify the source of the deposits before discovering that they were coming from Shin. The representative also claimed that the actor had specifically requested that her contributions not be publicised and that the money be used to pay for burn patients’ treatment and support study programmes for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Korea JoongAng Daily noted that the foundation representative’s exact identity remained unclear. Nevertheless, Shin’s longstanding charitable work has been independently documented, with several organisations confirming the donations they have received from her over the years.

More than $800,000 donated to burn victims alone

One of the organisations that has publicly acknowledged Shin’s support is the Hallym Burn Foundation, which helps people suffering from serious burn injuries. According to SBS, the actor has donated 100 million won (approximately $73,000) to the organisation every year since 2015. Her contributions reached 1.1 billion won (around $800,000) by September 2026, marking 11 consecutive years of annual donations. The foundation said the money has helped cover medical treatment and nursing expenses for burn victims, particularly children and women. More than 200 patients have benefited from the financial assistance made possible by her contributions.According to an official from the Hallym Burn Foundation quoted by SBS, Shin makes an effort to find out what young patients would like to receive during Christmas and traditional holidays. She surveys the children about their wishes and arranges personalised gifts for them. In some instances, she has also sent handwritten letters along with the presents, while in others she has delivered the gifts personally. The foundation said her support over more than a decade had been deeply appreciated, particularly because it continued without her seeking publicity or recognition.

From vulnerable children to disaster-hit communities

According to The Korea JoongAng Daily, ‘The Remarried Empress’ actress has supported disadvantaged children, older adults living alone and North Korean defectors since 2009. She has also contributed to emergency relief efforts following natural disasters and other crises across South Korea. Her donations have reportedly supported people affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, wildfires, earthquakes and floods. The actor has continued to contribute whenever communities have faced emergencies, making disaster relief another important part of her philanthropic work. The recent reports also highlighted her support for educational programmes and study facilities for children from low-income households. Such initiatives can provide children with access to learning resources and a suitable environment to study, particularly when their families cannot afford additional educational support.Although the reported 3.7 billion won figure attracted attention, The Korea JoongAng Daily said her cumulative charitable contributions are believed to have crossed 4 billion won (approximately $2.9 million) when earlier and additional donations are included.

Donated on her wedding day too

Shin’s commitment to charitable giving also continued during a significant personal milestone. On her wedding day in December 2025, she and fellow South Korean actor Kim Woo-bin donated a combined 300 million won (approximately $220,000) to three organisations, including the Hallym Burn Foundation, Asan Medical Center and Good Friends, according to SBS.Kim, who has also maintained a record of charitable contributions since 2014, has reportedly donated more than 1.1 billion won over the years. Together, the couple’s cumulative donations have exceeded 5 billion won (approximately $3.6 million), according to The Korea JoongAng Daily.Shin has previously spoken about why she did not want her charitable activities to become public knowledge. She said she once believed that good deeds should be done quietly, without attracting attention. However, she later came to feel that when influential people speak about their contributions, it can encourage others to participate in charitable activities as well.In an earlier interview, she expressed the hope that her support would reach people who might otherwise be left without assistance. She also said she hoped that reports about donations could inspire even one person to think about helping someone in need.

Shin Min-a’s return to the screen

The renewed attention around Shin’s philanthropy comes as the actor returns to the screen with the Disney+ original series The Remarried Empress, released on November 4, 2026. She plays Navier, a queen whose marriage and position are challenged after her husband seeks to replace her with another woman.Shin has built a successful career through popular South Korean television dramas, including ‘Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha’, ‘Our Blues’ and ‘My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho’.
