A North Carolina student went inside a convenience store after a gas pump failed to print his receipt; the $3 Powerball ticket he bought there won him $2 million

Life does not always go the way we plan. Sometimes, an unexpected detour can lead to something extraordinary. Bram Dunehew, a college student in North Carolina, had no plans of winning $2 million in the lottery when he stopped to refuel his car. The gas pump failed to print his receipt, sending him inside a convenience store. On a spur-of-the-moment decision, he bought a $3 Powerball ticket, which turned into a life-changing Halloween windfall! “It’s crazy because I never would have even bought that ticket if the receipt had printed outside,” Dunehew told the NC Education Lottery.

A receipt that changed the course of his life

On Friday, October 30, Bram Dunehew stopped for petrol in Harrisburg. The errand should have taken five minutes. Fill the tank, grab the receipt and drive home. But the pump had other plans. After filling the tank, the receipt didn’t print. So Dunehew, a Concord resident studying civil engineering at college, walked inside Sam’s Mart on N.C. 49 to sort it out. While inside the convenience store, he picked up a $3 Powerball ticket. It was a random decision. Nothing about that purchase was planned or special. Never in his wildest dreams did Dunehew think he would win the lottery that weekend. The printer outside was the only reason he went in at all.

Five white balls and a Power Play

The ticket was for Saturday night’s drawing, which fell on Halloween. When the numbers were read, Dunehew had matched all five white balls! He was ecstatic. That alone was worth $1 million. His Power Play option doubled the prize to $2 million! The college student would not have bought the lottery ticket if the gas station’s printer had not malfunctioned. “I think Halloween’s now my favourite holiday. Trick or treating was fun as a kid, but this is insane,” he told the outlet. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million. Dunehew didn’t hit the jackpot, but the odds still illustrate how rare his prize was. The winners have 180 days from the drawing date to claim their prizes, at the lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After federal and state tax withholdings, he will take home $1,440,201. He plans to use some of the money to buy his father a Cadillac. It is a gift that connects the win to his family, rather than the prize itself.Lottery money has its own story in Cabarrus County, where education programmes received $16 million in lottery support last year. Dunehew’s ticket was a small part of that system, bought on a whim at a counter he only visited because a machine failed.Sometimes these detours take us to places we would otherwise never go. In Dunehew’s case, that detour has brought him a fortune.
