NEW DELHI: Notorious gangster Hari Chand Jaat, aka Harry Boxer, has been detained in US at the instance of Indian law enforcement agencies. Boxer was apprehended in California Friday and efforts are on to bring him back to India, sources said. Coming close on heels of gangster Himanshu Bhau’s detention, the development has sent ripples across the underworld, with many gangsters planning to leave US, they said.Indian security and intelligence agencies had been closely tracking Boxer’s movements since the firing incident at film director Rohit Shetty’s home in Mumbai earlier this year. His detention is being seen as a big breakthrough as Boxer operated a core module of the Lawrence Bishnoi criminal syndicate from overseas.His name had also surfaced in connection with firing incidents at comedian Kapil Sharma’s cafe in Canada, besides several cases across Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana.Boxer (40), a resident of Chatarpura village in Kotputli-Behror of Rajasthan, earned his moniker due to his background as a sports enthusiast and boxing coach. Transitioning from a sporting and farming background, he moved into the underworld and has been absconding since 2022, eventually fleeing India.
His latest detention follows a brief detention in Jan 2026, when he tried applying for asylum and was temporarily held by immigration authorities before being allowed to leave, sources said.Indian agencies are currently coordinating efforts to secure Boxer’s custody.
