Cage’s accommodation troubles began after a huge sinkhole developed near the driveway of his beachfront property in Malibu. The collapse reportedly affected the driveway and extended into the adjoining roadway, raising concerns about the safety and accessibility of the neighbourhood. The sinkhole appeared in September 2026 following severe coastal conditions and flooding along Southern California’s coastline. Reports attributed the damage to coastal erosion, heavy rainfall and unusually high tides. Images from the scene showed broken asphalt, concrete and other debris inside the massive crater, which was estimated by KTLA to measure approximately 30 feet by 30 feet. The damage was not limited to Cage’s property. According to a statement from the City of Malibu, 31 properties in the neighbourhood were declared unsafe because emergency services could no longer access the area adequately. The city explained that the collapse of a beachfront driveway had extended into the roadway, blocking access for residents as well as fire and law enforcement personnel responding to emergencies.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the hole was approximately 25 feet deep and expanded to around 30 by 60 feet, swallowing the driveway and making the adjoining road impassable. The incident also affected essential infrastructure in the neighbourhood. A gas leak was reported following the collapse, prompting authorities to shut off the gas supply. Emergency evacuation orders were issued for 31 properties, with officials warning that the damaged roadway had restricted access for fire and sheriff’s department personnel. The Los Angeles Times further reported that Cage had obtained permits for repair-related work, including debris removal, soil sampling and preparations to protect the property from further erosion.
